🧠 Breaking the Silence on Mental Health in Kisumu

📅 July 20, 2024 · 📍 KPLC Kisumu

Mental health has long been a stigmatized topic in Kenya’s workplaces and homes. Recognizing the urgent need for education and safe dialogue, Hope Rekindled Initiative partnered with KPLC Kisumu to host a transformative Mental Health & Wellness Forum.

KPLC staff were introduced to tools like PHQ-9, a globally recognized depression screening, and guided through stress and trauma awareness. Youth programs focused on students and unemployed graduates, with reflections and self-awareness activities.

We're now creating a Mental Wellness Toolkit for schools and workplaces, empowering peer mentors and transforming workplace culture around mental health.

🗣️ BREAKING THE SILENCE: COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATION DIALOGUE

📅 February 18, 2026 · 📍 Community Dialogue

Akinyi, a young girl of 16 years is in high school. She started showing signs of adulthood really early and by this time... The boys in her area call her Big Machine and often they tease her about driving her! She has always felt alone, not knowing how to or even who to speak to about her body image...

Akinyi’s story is a sad one, but unfortunately, it is a reality for many young girls in our communities. Preyed upon by older men who take advantage of their vulnerability and lack of information. Opiyo was "gentle," but the outcome was devastating: pregnancy, interrupted education, and a life of abuse.

We are living in an information era, yet assumptions prevail. Opiyo assumed Akinyi was on contraceptives; Akinyi assumed Opiyo cared for her. A simple intervention—a conversation with a teacher, a neighbor, or a mentor—could have changed everything.

Why CSE Matters

Conversations around sexuality are often considered taboo. Curiosity and peer pressure lead to risky behavior. Globally, millions of adolescents face early pregnancies, STIs, and GBV. A UNESCO study shows that young people who receive age-appropriate Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) are more likely to make informed decisions about their bodies.

In Kenya, society still shies away from these talks, fearing they promote sex. This gap has negative outcomes. We need safe and inclusive platforms for dialogue.

Our Commitment

We took part in this community dialogue to advance human rights, health, and dignity. Topics such as consent, healthy relationships, and safe sex were discussed as vital life skills. Normalize sexuality talks to do away with harmful taboos and pave the way for healthier relationships.

Knowledge is power. Silence is harmful.
